Kanno became a part of my family 2 days after the death of Yoko. It was strange to have a empty cage so I decided to
get two rats to fill the empty space. At the pet shop there was a cage full of baby rats jumping everywhere to get my
attention, I picked the only female out of bunch and then looked at the other cage that held the mom rat, she was just
sitting seemingly relieved to have a brake from the little ones.... boy was she wrong, I took her home with me too.
Kanno was a very liberal mother, she let her daughter Shimomura do anything she wanted, include pushing her around and escaping the cage once in a while, but she was well mannered just the same. I named her Kanno after Yoko, whom was also name after one of my favorite composers... Yoko Kanno and Yoko Shimomura.
Kanno had a great life, sharing a new large cage as the elder of 5 other young ones, but began to develop a tumor in her second year under her arm and then later on her tummy by her uterus. Shimomura is now beginning to develop tumors in the same spots, so the condition is generic. Kanno lived for a long time with the tumor as it grew to the size of a tennis ball, but she did not appear to be in any pain, she was little trooper.
On May 24th, I found Kanno laying at the corner of the cage with a slow breathing pace, so I knew her time was coming. I took her out and made her comfortable in a small blankie and laid her on the bed. She passed away that night and is now buried by Yoko.
